Skills for Climbing (SFC) is the creation of Glen Young. Glen has worked as an outdoor educator, outdoor skills instructor, and guide since 2001. He guides rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing, glacier mountaineering, and high altitude expeditions on five continents. He has certification and training through the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE), Silverton Avalanche School (SAS), Wilderness Medical Institute (WMI), National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA), and other nationally and internationally recognized bodies.
Glen initially created SFC to provide continuing education for mountain guides he was training in Nepal. However, as the project grew larger it became a source of information for the climbing public in parts of North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. Glen owes a great deal of gratitude to the many climbing partners, mentors, instructors, coworkers, and clients who have contributed to his understanding of climbing in all its forms. He hopes the knowledge and skills gained from resources on this site help to reduce accidents and make the joy of climbing accessible to more people around the world.
Glen has worked for the following guide services and outdoor education providers:
- Yosemite Mountaineering School
- Nepal Alpine Guides
- American Alpine Institute
- Mountain Madness
- Mountain Trip
- Miyar Adventures
- Peak Mountain Guides
- Jackson Hole Mountain Guides (The Mountain Guides)
- Kaf Adventures
- National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
- Alaska Crossings
- Odyssey Wilderness Programs
- Saint Elias Alpine Guides
- Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing
When not guiding and instructing Glen volunteers his time working for Karma Project. Karma Project is a nonprofit organization that was born of a partnership between Glen Young and Karma Gelyjen Sherpa of Nepal. The organization funds medical services, education, and infrastructure projects in remote areas of the Himalayas. Glen also works through the organization to provide training to Nepalese mountain guides who work on eight-thousand-meter peaks such as Mount Everest.
